HISTORY
The Municipality of Daet is a treasure trove of history of Bicol Region. The obscurity about the origin of Daet has unblemished when the Second Edition book about the history of Daet was published in 2009. The book was entitled DAET: Kabikolan's Bulwark of Nationalism authored by renowned historian, Dr. Danilo Madrid Gerona.
Based on the book, Daet was created as "Doctrina" in 1583 during the Franciscan Mission. In one theory, the name of Daet came from the word "dait-dait", meaning clusters. Unfortunately, no artifactual nor linguistic evidence is available to support this belief. Fray Marcos de Lisboa's sixteenth century Bicol-Spanish dictionary offers a promising area of research into the obscure toponymic system of the ancient Bikolanos. According to his dictionary entitled "Vocabulario de la Lengua Vicol" the term daet and bila is synonymous which both mean "to make friends" or "to be reconciled". But the word ceased to be use at the time of Spanish conquest and the word bila, according to Lisboa, assumed wider circulation.
